What is restaurant digital signage?

Cloud-managed screens you control from anywhere

Restaurant digital signage replaces printed menus, lightbox boards and window posters with screens managed from a central cloud platform. You update content in seconds — from a laptop or phone — and changes appear immediately on every display in every location.

Unlike printed menus, digital signage has no lag between the decision and the change.

If an ingredient price spikes, you adjust across all locations in seconds. If a dish sells out at 1pm, you remove it before the lunch rush peaks.

Why it works

Six ways digital signage pays for itself

Percent icon

Eliminate menu update costs

Every seasonal change or price adjustment used to hit your budget. With Look DS, you update every menu board across every location from one dashboard — no printing, no shipping, no ladder-climbing to swap a poster.

Increase upsell revenue

Bright, dynamic visuals guide customers toward high-margin items and add-ons they might otherwise miss. Featuring a premium combo alongside the standard menu consistently encourages upgrades and increases average ticket size.

icon_XL_clock

Reduce perceived wait times

Screens in queuing and waiting areas keep guests entertained with chef highlights, social feeds or brand stories. Research shows this makes waits feel significantly shorter — and happier customers leave better reviews.

Shield

Reduce order errors

Visual menus with clear photos, prices and descriptions reduce questions at the counter and cut down on food waste from wrong orders. In fast-casual settings, clear digital headers help customers decide before they reach the register.

React instantly to change

Supply costs change. Items sell out. Weather shifts. Digital signage lets you react in seconds — adjust a price, pull a dish, swap a promotion — across all screens and all locations simultaneously, with no wasted materials.

Digital signage built for your format

Different formats have different pain points. Look DS handles the full range

QSR & Fast Food

Speed is everything

Turn screens into self-ordering touchpoints that reduce queues and speed up service. Showcase visuals that drive impulse decisions and make combos irresistible. Instantly update menu, promote upsells, and guide customers to higher-value choices..

Fast Casual

Reduce queue friction

Build-your-own concepts need clear visual hierarchy. Zone your screens to show categories on one side and featured combos on the other — helping customers decide before they reach the counter.

Fine Dining

Storytelling over selling

Use displays for subtle storytelling — chef profiles, seasonal ingredient origins, wine pairing suggestions — that elevate the experience without breaking the mood. Templates designed for premium aesthetics keep the atmosphere intact.

Coffee Shops & Cafes

Seasonal drinks in seconds

Seasonal drinks, loyalty programmes and daily specials change constantly. Update every chalkboard-replacement screen instantly. Cafe-aesthetic templates let you maintain your brand feel while managing content remotely.

Bars & Nightlife

Energy on every screen

Happy hour countdowns, event promotions and live social media feeds keep the energy high. Schedule content to change automatically as the night progresses — no one needs to touch the remote.

Franchise & Multi-Site

One dashboard, every location

Push a price change or a sold-out notice to all locations simultaneously. Group screens by branch, region or screen type for targeted updates, or broadcast to the entire network with a single click.

Where you'll use it

Six placements, one platform

Person wearing a dark green and beige cap looking at a blurred café menu board with a coffee cup image.

Digital menu boards above the counter

Replace static lightboxes with screens that switch from breakfast to lunch at 10:30 AM automatically. Zone a display to show a price list on one side and a 10-second food video on the other, maximising every square centimetre of hardware.
Tray with a burger, fries, cupcake, and Coca-Cola cup resting on the side of a blue vintage car seat with a diner menu in the background.

Drive-thru boards

Drive-thru screens run in rain, sunlight and low-connectivity environments. Look DS caches content locally so menus stay visible even when the car park Wi-Fi is unreliable. Content updates push across all lanes simultaneously.
Busy modern cafe interior with wooden tables, hanging lights, and customers dining and socializing.

Dining area upsell screens

While customers wait for their food, screens promote desserts, upcoming events and your Google review score. Digital screens in waiting areas measurably reduce perceived wait time — and a happier wait means better tips.

Self-service kiosks

Interactive touchscreens let customers order and customise without a cashier. They offer upsells consistently on every single order — a side dish, a drink, a dessert — at the exact right moment, and reduce order errors in the kitchen.

Kitchen & back-of-house displays

Display shift schedules, prep instructions and order counts on screens the kitchen team can see. Same platform, pointed inward — no separate software needed for staff communication.

Content best practices

Tips for restaurant digital signage content

01

Less text, more image

Customers scanning a menu board from three metres away won't read full descriptions. Show the dish name, price and one compelling photo. If you can't read it in three seconds, simplify.

02

Keep videos under 15 seconds

A short loop of your burger being assembled or a cold drink being poured grabs attention without hijacking the screen. Longer videos slow the ordering process.

03

Match content to the moment

Hot soup on cold mornings, iced drinks in summer, desserts during the dinner rush. Use dayparting to schedule these contextually relevant promotions automatically — set once, runs forever.

04

One screen, one message

The most common mistake is cramming a full printed menu onto one display. Use multiple screens per category, or use playlists to rotate. One clear message always outperforms ten competing ones.

05

Use honest food photography

Images on screen should match what is actually served. Overpromising with stock photography builds distrust the moment the dish arrives at the table.

06

Update regularly

Even if your core menu stays the same, refresh your promos regularly to stay visually relevant. Use professionally designed templates to quickly update offers, highlight combos, and keep your screens looking polished.

Common mistakes

What to avoid when setting up restaurant digital signage

A red cross inside a black circle

Putting your entire printed menu on one screen

A printed menu can list 60 items in small font because customers hold it in their hands. A screen three metres away needs larger fonts and fewer items per slide.

Fix: Split categories across multiple screens or use a rotating playlist. One clear category per screen or slide.

A red cross inside a black circle

Not accounting for glare and viewing angles

A screen that reflects a window is useless during the day. Many restaurants install screens and only discover this problem when it's too late to move them easily.

Fix: Test viewing angles at different times before committing to a placement. For window-facing displays, use high-brightness panels (1,000+ nits).

Menu featuring crispy chicken wings with drink for $12, fish and chips for $8.99, and double burger with fries and drink for $15.
A red cross inside a black circle

Using consumer TVs in demanding environments

Consumer TVs are not built for 16-hour days. Drive-thrus, kitchens and outdoor installations require displays rated for continuous commercial operation.

Fix: Use commercial-grade displays for high-demand environments. The Look HDMI Player works with both commercial and consumer screens where appropriate.

A red cross inside a black circle

Choosing software with no offline failsafe

If your signage software requires a live connection to display anything, a network outage means blank screens mid-service. This is the number one cause of frustration with digital signage.

Fix: Use commercial-grade displays for high-demand environments. The Look works with both commercial and consumer screens where appropriate.

Frequently asked questions about restaurant digital signage

How much does restaurant digital signage cost?

Pricing with Look DS begins at $15 per screen per month, and annual billing brings that down to $13.50. More screens, lower price. On top of the subscription, budget for whatever display or media-player hardware you still need: a single screen can often run on a compatible TV that is already in the room, while a bigger rollout usually calls for commercial displays. A 14-day trial with every feature unlocked is available too, so you can price out a real setup before you pay for anything.

Do you have templates and features for cafés and coffee shops?

Yes. The template library ships with café and coffee-shop layouts, and the same scheduling tools apply to them. Typical boards cover seasonal drinks and the pastry case; others handle size upgrades, modifiers, loyalty offers, Wi-Fi details or opening hours. Any of them can be set to change by daypart. For a two-person team the real benefit is not having to rebuild a screen from scratch every time something on the menu moves.

How long does restaurant digital signage take to set up?

A basic one-screen Look DS setup can usually be completed in under an hour. Install the Look App on a compatible device or connect a Look HDMI Player, sign in to the cloud CMS, add your content and publish it to the screen. Multi-location deployments take longer to plan, but additional screens can be added to the same account instead of building separate systems.

Can a screen show order-ready numbers or a table waitlist?

Yes, restaurant screens can show order-ready numbers, pickup instructions or a table waitlist when the relevant data is supplied to the signage system. Look DS supports external triggers through its Actions/API tools and Zapier, so a connected workflow can update what guests see. This is separate from a kitchen display system: Look DS presents the information, while the ordering or waitlist platform remains the source of record.

What happens if my internet connection goes down?

Your scheduled restaurant content keeps playing if the internet goes down. Look DS caches published media locally on each player, so an outage does not automatically leave the screen blank. This is especially useful for drive-thru lanes, basement kitchens and other locations with unstable Wi-Fi; you only need connectivity again when you want to sync new content or settings.

Can I use a regular TV as a digital menu board?

Yes, you can use a compatible consumer TV for restaurant digital signage in many indoor settings. Look DS supports Android, Fire OS, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Windows, Linux, macOS, Raspberry Pi and Amazon Signage devices. For kitchens, storefront windows and drive-thrus, commercial displays are usually a better fit because they are designed for longer operating hours and higher brightness.

Can I run happy hour and tap list screens in a bar?

Yes, bars can use Look DS to schedule happy-hour promotions, cocktail menus and rotating tap lists on the same screens. A promotion can start automatically at 4:00 PM, disappear at 7:00 PM and be replaced by evening content without staff intervention. Menu data can also be maintained through tools such as Google Sheets when drinks or prices change frequently.

Is digital signage only for chain restaurants or large businesses?

No, restaurant digital signage works for single-location cafés and bars as well as large chains. Look DS lets you start with one paid screen, while the platform is used across more than 60,000 screens in 120+ countries. A small operator can use the same scheduling, templates and remote-update tools without committing to an enterprise-scale deployment.in 120+ countries. A small operator can use the same scheduling, templates and remote-update tools without committing to an enterprise-scale deployment.e cloud CMS, add your content and publish it to the screen. Multi-location deployments take longer to plan, but additional screens can be added to the same account instead of building separate systems.

Which POS systems can I integrate with Look DS?

Look DS is not tied to one fixed POS ecosystem. Connections run through Zapier, Google Sheets or a custom API workflow, which covers most setups; Toast POS and Square are called out specifically on the restaurant page, and Zapier itself reaches 1,000+ apps. One caveat for time-sensitive menu changes: test the trigger and check how quickly it syncs before you let an automated workflow run during service.

Can I schedule different menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner automatically?

Yes, Look DS can switch breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night content automatically using dayparting schedules. For example, you can end breakfast at 10:30 AM and start dinner promotions at 5:00 PM without anyone touching the screen. Seasonal offers and happy-hour campaigns can also be scheduled in advance with their own start and end times.

Can I manage multiple restaurant locations from one account?

One account covers every location, all from the same dashboard. Displays can be grouped by branch, by region or by screen type, and a change then goes out to a single screen or to a whole group. In practice that means a price edit or a sold-out item can be pushed to dozens of restaurants at once, with no separate CMS login for each site.

Can I display allergens and calorie information on digital menu screens?

Yes, and it sits right next to the items themselves: calorie counts, nutrition detail, allergen flags. Change a recipe once in the CMS and every board picks it up, so nothing gets edited screen by screen. Requirements are not the same everywhere. FDA menu-labeling rules in the U.S. apply to chains with 20 or more locations, while Regulation 1169/2011 covers allergen information on non-prepacked foods in the EU. Since local rules vary, accuracy and placement remain the restaurant's call.

Can I run screens across all my franchise locations from one account?

Yes, a franchise network can run screens across all locations from one Look DS account while separating content by branch, region or screen group. Head office can distribute brand-wide campaigns, while permissions can give local teams access to the content they are allowed to change. Look DS currently manages more than 60,000 screens worldwide, so the same platform can scale from a pilot location to a large network.
