How do holographic displays work?

In a laser-illuminated holographic display, each pixel produces light waves, whose phases is modulated by controlling the display. Changing the phase introduces a defined delay in the light emitted by each pixel compared to other pixels. You can achieve this, for example, by using a suitable LCD.
Selecting specific phase values for neighboring pixels, similar to focusing light with a lens, you can make the light waves from these pixels interfere constructively at certain positions in space.
