How do holographic displays work?
When light propagates through space, it behaves like waves on water's surface. Laser light waves have a fixed wavelength (such as red light only) and a consistent phase relationship, causing synchronized wave propagation. You can use three lasers in red, green, and blue light to generate all other colors. In a laser-illuminated holographic display, each pixel produces light waves, whose phases is modulated by controlling the display. Changing the phase introduces a defined delay in the light emitted by each pixel compared to other pixels. You can achieve this, for example, by using a suitable LCD.
Selecting specific phase values for neighboring pixels, similar to focusing light with a lens, you can make the light waves from these pixels interfere constructively at certain positions in space. At these positions, the light from all those pixels combines to generate a bright point in space, a 3D pixel. This enables the entire 3D space visible to an observer from their position towards the holographic display to be filled with 3D pixels at any depth position, all in the same high resolution as experienced with high-definition television (HDTV). Unlike other display types that produce flat images on a screen, holography can truly generate 3D points in space, each with its color and brightness.
